Bleeding to death from an extremity is the leading cause of preventable combat death. The most appropriate tool for extremity hemorrhage control during Care Under Fire is applying an effective tourniquet to the injured limb.

Not all tourniquets are created equal and it is important to understand that an ineffective tourniquet, as many on the market today are, can do more harm than good. The C-A-T® is one of two strap tourniquets approved by the United State Army Institute of Surgical Research. It is also approved by the Canadian Forces Tactical Combat Casualty Care Working Group and for this reason is issued to every Canadian Forces soldier deployed on operations.
